Niokolo-Koba National Park is home to one of the richest wildlife in West Africa with more than 80 species of mammals. Unlike large East African parks, animals are not used to mass safaris - each encounter is therefore authentic and often rare.
Species that can be observed include:
- Lions and Leopards - present but discreet. Lions are very fearful, night leopards. Every observation is an extraordinary opportunity.
- Elephants - population increasing through conservation efforts. More easily observed in dry season around water points.
- Hippootames and crocodiles - very present along the Gambia River. Almost guaranteed observation from the banks or in canoe.
- Buffaloes and antelope - in herds in the savannah plains, among the most frequently seen animals.
- Phacochères - ubiquitous, their tail in the air when they run is one of the most fun shows in the park.
- Chimpanzees, baboons and colobes - several species of primates, often seen from the Grand Mirador de Simenti at the riverside.
The park also houses theDerby's elk, the largest antelope in the world - a rare species that is virtually nowhere else in West Africa.
For ornithologists, Niokolo-Koba is a major destination with more than 330 species of birds recorded: Abyssinia roller, calao terrestrial, crowned eagle, crowned crane... a permanent show throughout the day.
📅 What is the best time to visit Niokolo-Koba?
The park is open all year round, but not all times are valid. The ideal period is dry season, November to May - it is also the same we recommend for visit Kédougou in general.
🚗 How to get to Niokolo-Koba from Kédougou?
Niokolo-Koba National Park is accessible by National road N7 - the same road that connects Tambacounda to Kédougou. The main entrance is by Dar Salam, about 100 km from Kédougou in the direction of Tambacounda, or about 1h30 from road to vehicle.
At the entrance to Dar Salam, you must:
- Pay the visiting permit to the National Parks Directorate
- Take an official guide - it's required and non-negotiable
- Have a 4x4 vehicle for indoor runways
Certified guides can be found directly at the park entrance in Dar Salam. Some are specialized in fauna, others in flora - specify your interests at the time of choice. An ordinary taxi can take you to the entrance, but will not be able to take you to the inner observation tracks. If you come from Kédougou, think about rent a 4x4 with driver for the day.

🗺️ What to do at Niokolo-Koba Park?
The park is slowly discovered, at the rhythm of nature. To fully appreciate the atmosphere, it is advisable to spend at least one night. Here are the activities not to be missed during your visit to Niokolo-Koba National Park.
1. Safari 4x4 on the inside tracks
The main activity of the park. The inland slopes cross a variety of landscapes - savannahs, forest galleries, bamboo groves - with maximum observation chances in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid high heat hours where animals hide in the shade.
2. Boat ride on the Gambia River
Observing hippopotamus, crocodiles and birds from the water completely changes the perspective. The Gambia River crosses the heart of the park and concentrates an exceptional wildlife life, especially in the dry season when animals come to drink.
3. The Grand Mirador of Simenti
Observation point overlooking the confluence of the Gambia River and the Koulountou. It is one of the best places in the park to observe primates and birds without moving - settle down with binoculars, patiently and let nature come to you.
4. Ornithological observation
With over 330 species listed, Niokolo-Koba is a major destination for bird breeders in West Africa. Abyssinia Roller, terrestrial calao, crowned eagle, crowned crane... the observations are permanent throughout the day, whatever the season.
5. Sleep in the heart of the park
A number of campgrounds located within the park allow for a total immersion in nature. Spending the night on site completely transforms the experience: the sounds of the African night, the dawn on the savannah, the morning animals long before the arrival of visitors... It is there, between bushy noises and silence of the river, that the magic of Niokolo-Koba really works.
🎒 Practical tips before leaving
To be taken absolutely: Twins (indispensable), powerful mosquito repellent, sunscreen, hat, water in large quantities, camera with zoom and especially cash in FCFA. No vending machines on site.
Rules to be followed: never leave the vehicle in the presence of wild animals, do not feed animals, stay on marked tracks and follow the instructions of your guide in all circumstances.
